The Brief

Blurring the line between inside & out

Situated on the shores of Lake Windermere in the heart of the English Lake District, this extraordinary single-storey residence was designed to dissolve the boundary between architecture and landscape.

The client's vision was clear: full-height, floor-to-ceiling glazing across multiple bays, with glass-to-glass corners eliminating visual interruption. The result is lake-facing rooms that feel as though they float on the water itself, framing the lake like a living painting.

Working in close collaboration with Sadler Brown Architects and built by Oakwood Construction, this project demanded precision engineering at every stage, from design through to the final installation of a glazing package valued at £700,000.

The Glazing

Engineering at extraordinary scale

The glazing specification for this project pushed the boundaries of what's achievable in residential construction. Each panel was manufactured to exacting tolerances, with the largest single unit measuring 8 metres wide by 3 metres high, weighing in at a formidable 2 tonnes.

Glass-to-glass corners with precision spacers create seamless transparency at every junction, eliminating visible frames and maximising the uninterrupted connection to the landscape.

The Installation

Precision delivery, monumental scale

Installing glazing of this magnitude required one of the largest mobile cranes in the United Kingdom. Positioned on the road, the crane lifted each panel over the building to the lake-facing elevations, a logistical feat demanding millimetre precision and expert coordination.
